What Are Veneers?

Veneers are small, thin sheaths that are custom-made based on you and your dentist’s desired specifications. Made to blend in with the rest of your smile, they can be created to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, giving you a natural appearance.

They are one of the most effective cosmetic treatments available and are popular because of their ability to successfully cover a wide array of imperfections, including:

  • Severe dental staining/discoloration
  • Misshapen dental structure
  • Crooked teeth
  • Minor gaps between teeth
  • Chips or other areas of noticeable wear

Am I a Qualified Candidate?

If you are interested in receiving veneers, you will first need to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled cosmetic dentists. After a thorough examination, they will determine if you are qualified to receive veneers. To increase your chances of being given the green light for treatment, you should:

  • Possess no signs of tooth decay or gum disease
  • Not smoke or use tobacco products
  • Exhibit good general oral health

If you are prone to teeth grinding (bruxism) or play sports, it is highly recommended that you speak to a dentist in Roselle Park about receiving a custom-made mouthguard to protect your veneers while sleeping or engaging in a sports-related activity.

What Happens During The Veneer Process?

In most cases, having new veneers designed and placed will require two appointments. During the first visit, the affected teeth will be lightly buffed in order to allow room for the new veneer’s placement. Our team will capture a detailed impression of your smile and then attach temporary veneers while we wait for the finished product from the dental lab. Once we’ve received the permanent veneer, any final adjustments will be made before the restoration is securely cemented in place.

  • Greater durability
  • Improved aesthetics and boosted confidence
  • A more conservative way to hide imperfections because of the minimal tooth enamel removed (unlike dental crowns)
  • The ability to have restorations that can last a decade or longer with proper care

For many patients, veneers immediately seem like the ideal option, but you should take a look at all of the cosmetic treatments that are available to see how each one will affect your smile. They have a variety of price points and help patients achieve a wide array of outcomes. Here are some of the most common choices:

  • Invisalign – Invisalign is an ideal option for patients who have misalignment. This treatment costs several thousands of dollars, but it is one of the best ways to correct crooked teeth and bite problems.
  • Teeth Whitening –Professional teeth whitening is a quick solution for surface discoloration, and it is much more affordable than other cosmetic options. Results can last anywhere between a couple of months to several years depending on how well you care for them.
  • Direct Bonding – This minimally invasive procedure can be completed in just one short visit. It is one of the most affordable cosmetic options available, and it’s great for correcting minor flaws, including small chips, stains, and gaps. Bonding lasts anywhere between 3 to 10 years.
  • Veneers – Veneers aren’t the cheapest cosmetic service out there, but they are the easiest way to transform numerous aspects of your smile at the same time. This includes shape, color, and minor misalignment. The whole process can be completed in as few as two appointments and lasts up to 15 years or longer with proper maintenance.

How to Make Veneers Affordable

Veneers aren’t typically covered by dental insurance because they are considered to be an elective treatment. Fortunately, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be left completely on your own. In addition to accepting payment through cash, check, and major debit and credit cards, we work with Lending Club – a third-party financing company that can split the cost of treatment into manageable monthly installments with low interest. Are Veneers Permanent?

Technically, veneers themselves are not permanent since they will eventually require replacement. However, what is permanent is the modification to teeth needed for them to sit flush. A very small amount of the tooth is filed down ahead of veneer placement, and removed enamel will not grow back. That’s why teeth that have been prepared to receive veneers will also need to be covered by a restoration going forward, whether that’s a veneer or a crown. Our office is happy to go over other cosmetic options to consider if you have an issue with the preparation needed for veneers.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

The good news is most veneers last for at least 10 years when properly maintained in between routine dental checkups. If a veneer were to fail, come off, or become damaged in some way, it’s typically due to poor oral care habits. The average lifespan for a veneer is between 10 and 15 years, but they can also last for as many as 30 years. The best way to protect your veneers and ensure they last for as long as possible is by sticking to a very strict oral care routine at home and never biting down on hard objects.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

If you are wearing temporary veneers in the weeks before the permanent ones are fabricated and attached, it’s best to avoid any hard foods. This includes ice cubes (which should really be avoided period), raw fruits and vegetables, and candy. We also recommend staying away from very sticky foods or anything carrying a dark pigment that can easily cause stains. Once your permanent veneers are placed, you can enjoy most foods again. However, reducing your consumption of very hard or crunchy options will prolong the lifespan of your veneers. We recommend only drinking alcohol in moderation as it can actually weaken the bonding material holding the veneers in place.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

Whitening products, whether they are purchased over-the-counter or provided in a dental office, will not have any effect on the color of your veneers. However, neighboring natural teeth can be affected by whitening, which can result in a smile that is unevenly colored. If you plan to have both whitening completed and veneers placed, start with the whitening portion first so that the veneers can be color-matched after the fact.
